Venerable Sungchol’s Interpretation of the
MahāpranirvāṇaSūtra in the Sermon of One
Hundred Days

Venerable Sungchol(1912-93) is a Seon Master in Korea.
The Sermon of One Hundred Days is a quotation that Master
Sungchol teaches what is the Buddhist truth at Haein Temple
in1967. In this Sermon, Master makes a clear narration of the
middle way, the highest principle in Buddhism, and interprets
many sūtras, including MahāpranirvāṇaSūtra. It is an
important sūtra to Master, because he quotes many passages of
this sūtrato support his claim, ‘sudden awakening and sudden
practice’. He uses the middle way to explain some major concepts
in this sūtra, such as buddha nature (buddha-dhātu), the wisdom
of seeing the twelve links of dependent origination, dharma-
dhātu and nirvāṇa, and then they are integrated into the middle
